Since 2012, POOLgroup has been involved in the “Lachende Kölnarena” show (Cologne Arena Laughs) – the biggest carnival event in Germany. 2025 marked the 60th anniversary and, for the first time in the show’s history, a single performance drew over 250,000 attendees.

The organizer, Otto Hofner GmbH and the LANXESS Arena wanted to deliver a series of shows using leading-edge technology – welcoming thousands of guests and a program that blended music, dance, and comedy in an uplifting, atmospheric setting.

18 shows across six weeks presented a particular logistical and technical challenge. The technical setup had to be designed as a modular system because, between the carnival performances, the Arena hosted sporting events, concerts, and conferences. Stage sets and decorations were either completely removed or hoisted into the overhead rigging to ensure a rapid turnaround. In addition, an acoustic plan was designed to significantly reduce noise emissions for nearby residents.

The POOLcrew planned and managed the entire setup: Audio systems, lighting, rigging & stage automation, media technology & IT, setup and trade fair build, event infrastructure, technical planning, event design, content creation, trial builds, logistics, and event management.
Particular focus lay on coordinating up to 40 acts per show – from big bands and dance troupes to stand-up comedy acts. Every performer was supported by technical precision that guaranteed a flawless show.

In 2025, the 60th anniversary year, the Arena’s upper tier was, for the first time, almost always open – allowing around 250,000 Carnival fans to party together. What an atmosphere: Exuberant, colorful, and shaped by behind-the-scenes technology that powered a seamless running order.

The “Lachende Kölnarena” show proves that a traditional format can be combined with advanced event technology. Year after year, the close partnership with the LANXESS Arena has resulted in shows that set new standards for carnival – full of atmosphere for the party goers, impeccably organized backstage.
