From an online community event to a live conference with integrated reach
The German Engineering Day (Deutsche Ingenieurtag – DIT) is the Association of German Engineers’ headline event and provides a key platform to discuss technology policy in Germany. Here, preeminent specialists and leaders in science, business and politics explore future issues, the capacity for innovation, as well as Germany’s role as a technology hub.
POOLgroup has been involved with the DIT as a technical partner since 2021. It started out as a community event that was entirely online. Over the following years, we continued to develop the event together – initially in a hybrid format and today as a in-person event with an integrated streaming component.
Requirements & aim
The DIT provides a platform for the expert exchange of ideas and highlights the organizer’s strategic position.
This calls for conference architecture that supports discussion, reliably relays contributions, and delivers each program element with technical precision – both in the hall and the digital space.
The format has been consistently adapted over the years. Nowadays, in-person and digital participation are structurally interconnected and together form a robust event framework.
Challenge
The transition from purely online to hybrid and eventually an in-person event saw a fundamental change in both technical and organizational requirements.
Digital platforms, stage formats, and streaming infrastructure had to be integrated to ensure content was consistently delivered and the community could interact at all times.
Each iteration required a setup tailored to the exact format, location, and reach.
Delivery & services
As the overall technical partner for the German Engineering Day, POOLgroup created a production framework that evolved with each passing year.
Technical design & infrastructure
Planning and delivering the online, hybrid, and in-person event formats. Coordinating all technical trades including audio, video, lighting, IT, and streaming.
Streaming & platform integration
Establishing a robust streaming service for online participants. Integrating interactive elements into an end-to-end system architecture.
Direction & show calling
Centralized control of the program with precise timings. Technically flawless handling of speeches and conversations, playback content, and remote feeds.
Network infrastructure
Redundant signal paths and stable data connections for the stage, back office, and stream.
With every event, the setup was enhanced and adapted to accommodate new requirements.
Experience & result
Today, the German Engineering Day sets the benchmark for professionally integrated event formats which combine in-person participation and online reach.
The technical implementation creates the foundation for a meaningful, expert exchange of ideas and a compellingly staged event program. The event continues to resonate within the community long after the day itself, strengthening the position of the Association of German Engineers (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure – VDI) as the voice of engineers in Germany.
Partnership
The VDI and POOLgroup have been working closely together since 2021. The format has been continuously developed since its online beginnings.
The lessons learned are carried over into the next iteration, creating an event format that adapts to new demands and is built for the long term.
